چکیده

INTRODUCTION Many tracts of native vegetation still remain in the western portion of that vast North American grassland known as True Prairie. Some are mowed annually for the crop of excellent forage, but far greater areas are now in native pasture (Weaver & Fitzpatrick 1932, 1934). One result of the long years of study of the grazed portion of this grassland was the recognition of the manner in which the prairie vegetation degenerates under continued grazing (Weaver & Hansen 1941). A second was the classification of the resulting pastures into several grades or range conditions, each based upon the composition of its vegetation (Weaver & Hansen 1941). Further ecological analysis of the different conditions of pastures was not made because of the 7 years of severe drought (1934-40). But after 8 good years for recovery of the greatly depleted grasslands , the present study was carried out in 1949. The research was undertaken with a full knowledge that certain profound changes in prairie, which were also reflected in native pastures, had occurred both during and following the drought. There was a decrease in the amount of little bluestem (Andropo-gon scoparius)l which had been extremely abundant, and a resultant great increase in big bluestem (A. furcatus), formerly of much less abundance on up-land. Marked local increases in prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) and tall dropseed (S. asper) had also occurred. Decrease or disappearance of

Comparative life cycle environmental impacts of three beef production strategies in the Upper Midwestern United States

We used ISO-compliant life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the cumulative energy use, ecological footprint, greenhouse gas emissions and eutrophying emissions associated with models of three beef production strategies as currently practiced in the Upper Midwestern United States. Specifically we examined systems where calves were either: weaned directly to feedlots; weaned to out-of-state whea...

Rangeland condition assessment plays an important role in determining range health and applying appropriate management programs. This study aimed to evaluate the structure and function of a semi-steppe rangeland using Landscape Function Analysis technique (LFA) in different land conditions in western Isfahan province, Iran. For this purpose, 4, 3 and 7 sites in different rangeland condition cla...

Current and Future Land Use around a Nationwide Protected Area Network

Land-use change around protected areas can reduce their effective size and limit their ability to conserve biodiversity because land-use change alters ecological processes and the ability of organisms to move freely among protected areas. The goal of our analysis was to inform conservation planning efforts for a nationwide network of protected lands by predicting future land use change. We eval...

Overcoming barriers to seedling regeneration during forest restoration on tropical pasture land and the potential value of woody weeds

Combating the legacy of deforestation on tropical biodiversity requires the conversion to forest of large areas of established pasture, where barriers to native plant regeneration include competition with pasture grasses and poor propagule supply (seed availability). In addition, initial woody plants that colonise pasture are often invasive, non-native species whose ecological roles and managem...

Sustainable, low-input, warm-season, grass–legume grassland mixtures: mission (nearly) impossible?

Grazing lands in warm-temperate and subtropical North America have become less diverse. Pastures are typically grass monocultures, while rangelands are generally managed for the grass components. Overstocking, selective herbicides, fire exclusion and heavy rates of nitrogen fertilizer have contributed to near exclusion of native, warm-season legumes. The simplicity of managing grass monoculture...
